BESIDE ONE SELf | ADAM EDDY

November 4th, 2021 - December 12th, 2021

Crossing Art is pleased to present Beside One Self, the solo show by American artist Adam Eddy this coming November. Featuring both paintings and interactive projects created by the artist, this exhibition represents an exploration of objects and icons as proxies for the self. As the song Pink Moon says, “none of you stand so tall, pink moon gonna get ye all”. Adam Eddy’s work seeks to allow this destruction of self in exchange for an expanded concept of the body; an opportunity to stand beside oneself.

Adam Eddy is interested in his paintings being simultaneously image and object or a synthesis of still life and sculpture. This dichotomy creates an implied interactivity between artwork and viewer; a conversation between two kinds of bodies. Eddy uses structures like canvas stretchers, pools, and celestial bodies as a form of figuration through expressive color and shape. Each work uses these everyday references as compositional formats and rough approximations of the body. Flesh over bone becomes canvas over wood. Our minds construct divisions between anatomy and the spaces we inhabit but these borders are permeable. Animacy and inanimacy are grammatical and semantic ideas that can be stretched, distorted, and contradicted.

One of the works in this exhibition “Pink Moon” is inspired by the singer Nick Drake, who Eddy has listened to since high school. Each subject in Adam Eddy’s work comes from his life experiences like the odd jobs he’s worked or apartments he’s lived in. Having grown up in South Carolina, Adam Eddy uses his studio practice to both elevate and poke fun at contemporary art; a world he feels deeply invested in but also on the periphery of. Eddy rejects self-seriousness and embraces a blend of humor, play, and experimentation influenced by artists like Philip Guston. Thus, we have the opportunities to appreciate that Eddy’s work is equal parts aspirational, average, celebratory, and mundane.
